If You Want To Go Far, Go Together

I used to roll my eyes at the saying “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Going “together” implied that I’d need help, and good luck telling a Taurus that she can’t do something on her own!

When my business was new and I was helping entrepreneurs get their websites up and running, it was easy to put my head down and spend hours on the laptop designing and creating sites. Except there was no water cooler where I could catch up with co-workers when I needed a break. And no one checked in to see how my workload was...or if I’d eaten a mouthful of food that day. 

That’s when things slowly started to make sense. Going fast was great for getting started and actually taking action. Something I’d struggled to do for a loooong time. Maybe you can relate.

But going far, which is my goal and the goal of so many others in online business, means that this is a marathon and not a sprint. 

Have you ever trained for a marathon or watched one on TV? I’ve cheered several friends on from the sidelines and was so impressed by how cared for everyone is. 

There are booths at the starting point helping runners get oriented and checked in. Then there are pit stops along the route where helpful folks hand out water, sports drinks, and maybe even a little mid-race snack. Even the finish line, where you’re supposedly finished, has event staff there to make sure participants get their goodie bags and nutrition before they’re embraced by family members. 

Now that’s what I call a support system!

What does your support system look like? You probably don’t need someone in charge of your food and hydration but do you at least have a good friend in the entrepreneurial world you can chat with when you’re stuck on a project and need some guidance?

I’m not a particularly chatty person but after meeting a few amazing souls on similar journeys as mine, it became really easy to share wins and troubleshoot roadblocks with them. Without that kind of support and friendship it’s easy to go fast...and then fizzle out. 

Being in business online is such a gift, especially these days. It can be an incredible creative outlet and something you’ve always dreamed of having for yourself. Just don’t forget to take care of yourself in the process.

While the internet is so huge and a zillion people are on it, never has it been easier to find like-minded people to help navigate this crazy journey. Just look at the number of Facebook groups dedicated to businesses of every kind. 

You can Zoom with a buddy on the other side of the country and it feels like you’re having a casual coffee chat in the same room! How cool is that?

And so I’ve come back to thinking about the saying I shared at the beginning, only to find that as my business has grown, so too has my circle of trusted online biz friends. Something I never thought possible. 

My challenge for you is to think about how you’re doing things. Fast and alone, or far and together?
